GIRLS South West Champs - NEW â€‹

On Sunday, 16 June, the South West Girls’ Championship returned to Filton Golf Club where it was last held back in 2019.  Unfortunately, the reason for its absence was due to Covid and a couple of years where the number of entries made the Championship unviable.  However, this year, it was decided to give it one last try to generate enough support to make it viable and with 59 girls entering the Championship we had a very competitive field all wanting to be crowned South West Champion.

Following a stormy day on Saturday, we were very lucky to have a beautiful dry and sunny Sunday and with the overnight rain, the ground was a little softer, making it very slightly better for the girls although most of them felt it was challenging and most of the putting greens were lightening fast.

No-one shot under par, but several girls played better than their handicap and with the field going out in reverse order, with the low handicappers going out last, we had to wait until the final groups to find our new Gross Champion in Neve Jeffery from Knowle GC who won on countback from Summer Carash from Minchinhampton GC.  Out Nett Champion had a very long wait - Layla Randal from Ferndown GC was in Group 5 of the 20 groups competing but with a nett 68 it was well worth the wait to pick up the Overall Nett Trophy.

With several Gloucestershire girls in the top three of the leaderboard, it was Gloucestershire, who picked up the Best Gross County Team, with Neve, Summer and Rosie Boyle (Long Ashton) all scoring 79.

A big ‘Thank You’ to Filton Golf Club for hosting the Championship, to F&B for making sure we had food and drinks and to the Greens staff for preparing and making the course was in great condition.  Thank you to the members for giving up their course and to the parents for bringing their girls from across the South West and supporting them in competing on Fathers Day!

Thank you also to Hanah Stephens and Lloyd Katz for acting as starters on the day, to Carole Greenup and Bernie Powell for refereeing, to Sheila Davidge and Alex Saunders for helping on the registration desk and to Karen Rix, Chairman of the South West Women’s Golf Association.

Next year’s Championship will take place a little later in the year on 13 July at Oake Manor GC, just outside Taunton, so please save the date and make sure you enter when it opens online next year.  As long as we get the support from the girls, we will continue to run this prestigious Championship.

Thank you to everyone who competed and we hope you enjoyed your time at Filton Golf Club.
